Summary
Martin and Alma Hjertaas settled in Saskatchewan in 1915 and the homestead in Wauchope is still in the family. The Hjertaas' were involved in the cooperative movement, the socialist CCF party of Tommy Douglas, and the founding of the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool. Through the generations, continuing today, the family has prided itself on public service. Orville Hjertaas, son of the pioneer Martin, became a father of medicare. He worked for the provincial government for a time, helping to set up the first hospitalization scheme in the town of Swift Current. Later he practiced medicine in Prince Albert, and became famous for his refusal to join the famous doctor's strike of 1962. The community clinic the residents built for him at the time, continues to serve patients today. Dr. Hjertaas passed away in 1998, shortly after being named to the Order of Canada, but his wife Millie and his brother Ralph both participated in the documentary. Blain Hjertaas, a member of the third generation, has revived the family farm by growing grass to restore the land to what it was when his grandparents first settled it. Dale, Another third generation Hjertaas is a biologist who, with some help from His Royal Highness Prince Philip, saved the burrowing owl from extinction
